Views of Boulder taken from Sunset Hill looking over the downtown area towards the University Hill area. The house in the foreground is 2245 16th Street. On University Hill the streets have just been plowed in. The house at 1005 12th Street is the only building in the area. Bachelder Ranch, on the site of Chautauqua, and Columbia Cemetery are also visible.

Mary Rippon (1850-1935) was born in Lisbon, Illinois. After completing high school, Rippon unsuccessfully sought higher education, which was unavailable to women during this time in the United States. Instead she spent five years studying in Germany, France, and Switzerland. Upon returning to America, Rippon began her career teaching high school in Detroit.
